Kelly Ripa on Tuesday introduced former NFL star Michael Strahan as her new co-host for "LIVE!"

For the last several weeks, Strahan has been rumored to be the front-runner to replace Regis Philbin. Strahan has co-hosted several times over the past year, including as recently as August 17.

UPDATE: Check out a recap of Michael Stahan's debut as Kelly Ripa's new co-host.

Guests for the September 4 show were scheduled to include "Homeland" actress Claire Danes and recent "American Idol" winner Phillip Phillips. Ripa kicked off the new season of "LIVE!" on Monday, September 3, hosting solo for the first time.

The syndicated show is distributed in national syndication by Disney-ABC Domestic Television and airs on weekdays in more than 200 markets across the United States. OnTheRedCarpet.com is also a product of the Walt Disney Company and its parent firm is KABC Television.

Strahan played his entire NFL career as a Defensive End for the New York Giants. He helped the team win the Super Bowl XLII in 2008 against the New England Patriots. He is currently a host of "Fox NFL Sunday." Strahan also starred on the shortlived Fox sitcom, "Brothers," in 2009.

Regis Philbin bid farewell to his longtime ABC daytime talk show "LIVE! with Regis and Kelly" on November 18, 2011, after serving as a host more than 28 years. Ripa first joined as co-host in 2001, replacing Philbin's longtime co-host Kathy Lee Gifford, who left the series in 2000.

Since Philbin's departure, 59 different men have co-hosted the show with Ripa including Nick Lachey, Neil Patrick Harris, Seth Meyers, Mario Lopez, Anderson Cooper and Jerry Seinfeld. Ripa's husband Mark Consuelos has also filled in as co-host several times since Philbin left.
