Keira Knightley talks 'Anna Karenina' role and 'extraordinary' wardrobe - See video
Keira Knightley is no stranger to a costume drama.
The actress has starred in films of that genre like "Pride & Prejudice," "Atonement" "A Dangerous Method" and her latest, "Anna Karenina."
Recently, the actress dished to OTRC.com about the film based on the 1877 Tolstoy novel of the same, what she loved about her character, the fantastic wardrobe by costume designer Jacqueline Durran and the diamonds she had to wear.
"It's amazing I wish I got to take them home," Knightley told OTRC.com about the jewelry she wore in the film at the Los Angeles premiere on Wednesday, November 14. "They were pretty great but unfortunately I had to give them all back. We were incredibly lucky. I am dripping in Chanel diamonds all the way through this film."
Knightley, who has been the face of Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle fragrance ad campaigns since 2006, stars in "Anna Karenina" as the titular character. She is a woman in a loveless marriage who lusts after a soldier. Jude Law plays as her husband while "Savages" actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson stars as her lover, Count Vronsky.
"The dresses themselves were totally extraordinary. They were by the amazing costume designer Jacqueline Durran, who did my costumes for 'Pride and Prejudice' and 'Atonement,'" the 27-year-old actress said. "She created that incredible green dress and she is just completely brilliant."'
Knightley, who was nominated for an Academy Award in 2006 for her role in "Pride & Prejudice," explained what she loved about the role.
"I think just her human-ness, you know? I think the fact that she is full of life and laughter and love and is completely wonderful and at exactly the same time is malicious and deceptive and needy and is horrendous," she said. "I think that she is a total fascination because you're never quite sure how you feel about her. You fall in love with her one second and totally despise her next and I thought that was fascinating."
The film also features several dance sequences choreographed by Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, including the first time Anna dances with Vronsky.
"Well we did about three weeks, absolutely non-stop rehearsal and then any time we weren't filming, we were rehearsing again for it," Knightley said about that sequence. "I'm not quite sure exactly what in total but a lot and it's a beautiful, beautiful dance."
"It's by the incredible choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and it is beautiful and it is very difficult," she added. "And I was trying to do it the other night and I was like, 'Come on, I learned this, I took so long learning this I must still know it' and I don't. It's completely gone."
"Anna Karenina" his U.S. theaters in limited release on November 16. Check out the trailer below.Reporting by Jacob Burch, correspondent for KABC Television's entertainment show "On The Red Carpet" (check for local TV listings).
