Keira Knightley and Steve Carell talk 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World'
Keira Knightley and Steve Carell co-star together in the apocalyptic comedy "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World" and the two actors dished about each other and their dog co-star during a recent interview with OnTheRedCarpet.com.
In "Seeking a Friend for the End of the World," a an asteroid is is heading toward earth and Dodge, played by Carell, spends the last days of earth trying to find his high school sweetheart while Penny, played by Knightley, accompanies him on the journey.
"I think what was brilliant about the script, and hopefully the film, is that you don't know which way it's going to go," Knightley told OnTheRedCarpet.com correspondent George Pennacchio in a recent interview, "I mean, and even to the very last moment in the script, that last scene, I still didn't know which way, how it was going to end. I loved that."
"When I read it I thought, it's going to be a happy ending either way," Carell added. "No matter what happens, these characters have evolved and have found something that is really satisfying for them and in that sense it's very uplifting no matter what happens."
Knightley rose to fame after appearing in the 2002 film, "Bend It Like Beckham." She has since appeared in three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, "Love Actually," "Pride & Prejudice," "Atonement," "Never Let Me Go" and "Last Night."
Knightley is set to star in "Anna Karenina" as a woman bound in a loveless marriage who lusts after a soldier. Jude Law is set to star as her husband, while "Kick-Ass" star Aaron Johnson will portray her lover, Count Vronsky.
The actress is aware that many audiences know her for her work in period piece films.
"I know there is an expectation but I don't think it's ever something I am particularly conscious of," she said. "I think that there is always going to be similarities in your work because you choose it and it's your taste but I think it is wonderful when you get opportunities to play something completely different."
Carell later added that even if it was something he's done before he doesn't mind doing a similar role because of working with actors like Knightly.
"And to work with somebody like that [points to Knightley], I mean come on. Even if it was exactly the same thing that I've been doing you get an opportunity to work with somebody who is so good, you just do it," he said.
In the film, Knightley's character has a dog, which the actors said was actually a rescue dog who was a bit of a ham for the camera.
"I think this dog knew when we were rolling," Carell said.
"Even if it was your close-up, [the dog] would always--you'd have a dog just there [in the shot] going free," Knightley added. "Trying to keep it down and up again."
