Katy Perry releases new single, 'Roar,' plus 'emoticon' video - watch
She is Katy Perry, hear her ROAR.
That is the title of the 28-year-old pop star's new rock anthem-like single, which leaked online early on Sunday, ahead of an official release on Monday, Aug. 12.
Backed by a furious drum beat, Perry's track is fierce, loud and perfect for a scorned woman who's feeling empowered (and speaking practically, "Roar" makes for great pep rally material as well).
"You held me down, but I got up / Get ready cause I've had enough / I see it all, I see it now," Perry belts out. "I got the eye of the tiger, the fire, dancing through the fire / 'Cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me roar."
The singer, who recently dated John Mayer and was previously married to British comic Russell Brand, does not reference anyone by name on "Roar," which is her first major release since her 2012 song "Wide Awake." "Roar" is set to be featured on Perry's upcoming fourth studio album, "Prism." The record hits stores in October.
Lady Gaga also released a new single recently -- "Applause"). On Sunday, Perry retweeted a Twitter post by the singer, which read: "Let's make 2013 a year where music/talent/artistry is more important than gossip/fanwars I respect all fanbases 4 their passion #BeTheChange."
