12/03/2013 by Kristina Lopez

Katy Perry was appointed as UNICEF's newest Goodwill Ambassador on Tuesday, Dec. 3.

The 29-year-old singer will have a special focus on engaging young people on the work UNICEF does to improve the lives of children and adolescents all over the world.

"Katy Perry is already a champion for children, and we look forward to hearing her 'Roar' on behalf of UNICEF," UNICEF Executive Director Anthony Lake said in a statement on Tuesday. "We are delighted that she is joining us as UNICEF's newest Goodwill Ambassador and lending her remarkable voice to amplify the voices of children and young people around the world."

"I believe young people have the power to change their own lives, with our help," Perry said in a statement. "I am honored to join UNICEF as a Goodwill Ambassador, and committed to doing everything I can to help children and adolescents who come from such different backgrounds but want the same thing: a brighter future."

Perry also tweeted about the announcement and wrote, "Guys! I am SO honored to become a @UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador today! I am #unconditionallyUNICEF."

The singer also tweeted a link to a video which showed clips of a trip she took to Madagascar as part of a UNICEF mission in April. The video can be seen below. Her newest single, "Unconditionally," can be heard in the background. Perry also participated in UNICEF's International Day of Girl Child celebration in October and she lent her song "Roar" to a new PSA for the organization.

Other celebrity UNCIEF Goodwill Ambassadors include David Beckham, Orlando Bloom, Mia Farrow, Liam Neeson, Vanessa Redgrave and Susan Sarandon.

Also on Tuesday, a series of black and white portraits of Perry and boyfriend John Mayer were released on Vanity Fair to promote their duet "Who You Love." The single is featured on Mayer's newest album "Paradise Valley," which was released in August.
