Katy Perry named MTV's Artist of the Year
Katy Perry was named MTV's Artist of the Year on Thursday for "empowering her fans with chart-topping hits."
"You just really felt her presence in pop culture throughout the year," the network's chief of music programming Amy Doyle said in a statement obtained by the Associated Press. Perry earned the inaugural honor for matching Michael Jackson's Hot 100 Billboard record for most No. 1 singles off of an album release.
The singer had five No. 1 singles on her "Teenage Dream" album land on the Hot 100 list, with her single, "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" earning its honor in November, a feat that has not been achieved since Michael Jackson released the "Bad" album in 1987. Perry is trying to beat the record with her current single, "The One That Got Away."
Doyle said that Perry beat out Adele for the honor, following a deliberation of seven panelists. Adele's song "Rolling in the Deep" was chosen as the top song of 2011.
Perry was also named one of Barbara Walters '10 Most Fascinating People of 2011.
Perry's husband Russell Brand also had big news on Thursday, as the comedian signed a deal with the FX network to do a late-night unscripted series.
Brand, 35, and Perry, 26, got married on October 23, 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan, India, where Brand also proposed to the singer. The two have appeared nothing but blissful since they began dating in September 2009 after the singer performed on the MTV Video Music Awards that were hosted by Brand.
Perry hosted the December 10 episode of "Saturday Night Live," where she did impressions of Pippa Middleton and Christina Aguilera.
Perry's new music video for her current single, "The One That Got Away" was directed by Floria Sigismondi and features 'Y Tu Mama Tambien' actor Diego Luna.
