Katy Perry is known for her wacky wardrobes and hair colors, but this time, the pop star did things a little differently.
Perry, 27, is the brand ambassador for Australian haircare company ghd. She recently took part in a whimsical photo shoot to promote the firm's new ghd air hair dryer and dressed as a mermaid, complete with purple hair, a bejeweled top and a glimmering green fish tail.
"David La Chapelle made the set amazing," Perry told the Australian edition of Marie Claire magazine. "It was fun - I got to have purple hair which foreshadowed the real purple hair I had last fall. It's as if Lisa Frank had done 'The Little Mermaid.'"
Frank is known for her colorful fantasy-themed children's apparel and stationary designs, which incorporate rainbows, unicorns and mermaids.
Perry, who most recently debuted bright blue tresses, has been a ghd spokesmodel since at least mid-2011 and has worked with La Chapelle on a series of campaigns for the company.
Perry told the magazine that she loved the mermaid costume so much, she was considering setting it aside for Halloween.
The newly single songstress recently took the stage at the DIRECTV Super Saturday Night on February 4, but before that, the singer got a little flirty at the Associated Press' NFL Awards.
Perry was a presenter at the ceremony. While posing for a photo with Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton, who won the award that night for Offensive Rookie of the Year, the singer said: "You'll be the first straight man I've had a photo with in a long time, so live up to it."
"I am," Newton replied, with a big smile on his face, according to the Associated Press, .
Perry is next set to perform at the 2012 Grammy Awards, which will take place in Los Angeles on February 12 at 8 p.m. ET and air on CBS. The singer is also set to perform on February 10 at the MusiCares Person of the Year Ceremony, which will pay tribute to Paul McCartney and feature other performers such as Tony Bennett, Coldplay and Neil Young. The singer recently split from husband Russell Brand. The 36-year-old comedian cited "irreconcilable differences" in the documents, which were filed in a Los Angeles Superior Court on December 30. The couple had no children together.
