Katy Perry drops out of the of the People's Choice Awards
Katy Perry has canceled an upcoming appearance at the People's Choice Awards following her split from husband Russell Brand.
"Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the People's Choice Awards," Perry Tweeted on January 9. "I want to thank u all for voting for me, fingers crossed!"
The appearance would have been her first since the split was announced on December 30. She is nominated for "Favorite Animated movie Voice," "Favorite TV Guest Star," "Favorite Female Artist," "Favorite Song of the Year" and "Favorite Pop Artist" as well as in several other categories. See the full list of nominees here. This is the second time Perry has spoken publicly since news of the demise of their marriage.
On January 7, Perry told her followers on Twitter "no one speaks" for her.
"I am so grateful for all the love and support I've had from people around the world. You guys have made my heart happy again," Perry wrote on Twitter on Saturday, adding, "Concerning the gossip, I want to be clear that NO ONE speaks for me. Not a blog, magazine, 'close sources' or my family."
The pop star had not previously commented on the issue, but the rumor mill ran rampant with theories after Brand dropped the bombshell divorce.
Brand issued a statement the day he filed for divorce from his wife of 14 months, telling the Associated Press, "Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I'll always adore her and I know we'll remain friends."
The 36-year-old comedian cited "irreconcilable differences" in the documents, which were filed in a Los Angeles Superior Court on December 30. The couple had no children together.
Perry, 27, and Brand were married on October 23, 2010 in a traditional Hindu ceremony in Rajasthan, India, where Brand also proposed to the singer. The two began dating in September 2009 after the singer performed on the MTV Video Music Awards that were hosted by Brand.
Perry and Brand were both photographed without their wedding rings over the holiday.
Perry spent Christmas in Hawaii with friends while Brand was in his native England. People magazine obtained photos of Perry and Brand, sans wedding rings -- Perry was spotted frolicking in the ocean over the weekend, while Brand was seen walking in London.
The People's Choice Awards will be hosted by Kaley Cuoco of "The Big Bang Theory" and is set to air on January 11 at 9 p.m. ET on CBS.
