Katy Perry denies dissing Beyonce and Shakira, talks Rihanna collaboration
Katy Perry wants to make clear she did not insult fellow singers Beyonce or Shakira during a radio interview in the UK, following recent reports.
Perry, 27, spoke on BBC Radio 1 on Monday about a reported musical collaboration with R&B star and good friend Rihanna.
"We are always planning to do it but it's one of those things where it's like, gotten so much build-up, if we don't deliver, like, the best song ... I was telling her, 'You know that Eurythmics song with Aretha Franklin, Annie Lennox - 'Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves?'' That's like, the kind of song that I'd want to do, instead of like, 'Hips Don't Lie,' which is still a great song by Shakira and Beyonce," Perry said.
She then corrected herself, saying: "I mean, not 'Hips Don't Lie.' What's that duet? 'Beautiful Liar.' I knew there was a 'lie' in it."
"I loved it," she added. "But I definitely want to do something that is just kind of like, so iconic and [Rihanna is] really kind of busy too. We're both busy but we had already planted the seed two years ago and it's just all about that special one. Because how disappointed would you be if that song came out and it actually wasn't that good? So sometimes you have to wait for greatness. I hope it'll be great."
"Beautiful Liar" was Beyonce's 2007 collaboration with Shakira, which hit number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100.
Perry took to her Twitter page on Tuesday to clear up rumors about how comments regarding Beyonce and Shakira.
"(Expletive) all y'all (press) dat thinks I dissed anyone, puhlez, u havin a slow news day or what?!" she Tweeted. "Get a life, cuz it's not mine! #hoodratcominout."
Perry sang several songs at BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, including her hit "Firework," from her album "Teenage Dream," and also payed tribute to Beyonce's husband, Jay-Z, by performing a cover of a track he recorded with Kanye West. She wore a Yankees baseball cap, a look Jay-Z tends to sport in public, and replaced expletives in the lyrics with radio-friendly words.
Perry and Rihanna have been friends for years. Rihanna and Perry often call each other bizarre nicknames that many may find offensive. Perry used several in a birthday Tweet to Rihanna on February 20.
According to People magazine, Perry toasted to Rihanna for her 24th birthday and was spotted at the Caribbean-themed bash at the Hearst Mansion in Beverly Hills in February. The R&B singer threw Perry a bachelorette party before her 2010 wedding to Russell Brand. The pair separated last year and their divorce is due to be finalized this summer.
Perry has often expressed her distain for many members of the media, namely the paparazzi. Perry, who has often dyed her hair different colors, discussed her methods for avoiding them, saying during the BBC Radio 1 interview: "I, like, pop a wig on, pop some hats on, a granny knit, and I go out the kitchen."
She also said she chose her current blue-dyed hairstyle as a tribute to Kate Winslet's character in the movie "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind."
