Katy Perry and Paramore salute the troops
Katy Perry was more than happy to perform for a few men and women in uniform on December 3 for the 2010 special "VH1 Divas Salute the Troops."
"This ones for the troops," Perry Tweeted on Friday. She later thanked her audience saying, "Thank you Troops! It doesn't matter what position u serve in, from computers to pilots we appreciate you ALL! GOD BLESS YOU & get home safe!"
The "California Gurls" singer, was part of the show's line-up along with Sugarland, Keri Hilson, Nicki Minaj, and Paramore. Through a partnership with the USO, the music acts performed at two military bases for the event.
Perry, Sugarland, Hilson and Minaj performed for an estimated 27,000 men and women in uniform at the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar in San Diego, according to the Associated Press. The members of Paramore visited troops at an undisclosed military base in the Middle East, according to VH1. The band's performance will be broadcast via satellite.
The opening number featured Perry, Hilson and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles in uniforms for a cover of the '40s classic "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy." Perry then went on to perform her current single "Firework" and then closed the show in a red gown with a thigh high slit that channeled Jessica Rabbit's look in the film "Who Framed Roger Rabbit."
"I love pinup girls," Perry told the wire service. "So, I tried to recreate that. I think any Army guy has a soft spot for a girl that can be painted on their plane."
The event also includes special guests and commentary from soldiers, marines, and other troops stationed on the front lines.
The "VH1 Divas" franchise began in 1998 to support the stations Save The Music Foundation. Past headliners have included vocal heavyweights like Aretha Franklin, Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Tina Turner, Mary J. Blige, and Beyonce. The show went on a five year hiatus after its 2004 special and returned in 2009 with Jennifer Hudson and Kelly Clarkson as headliners.
"VH1 Divas: Salute the Troops" is set to air on December 5. Check out photos from the event.
