Katie Couric to host daytime talk show on ABC
Katie Couric has signed a multi-platform deal with Disney/ABC TV Group to host a one-hour daily daytime talk show on ABC, according to an announcement from the network on Monday.
Couric will also serve as producer on the nationally syndicated talk show, which is set to premiere in September 2012. The veteran newscaster will also join the ABC News team.
Couric reunites with Jeff Zucker, the former "Today" show producer, who will serve as an executive producer on the yet-to-be-named syndicated series based out of New York City.
"I'm very happy to be returning to the network where I began my career as a desk assistant in 1979," Couric said in a statement. "It is tremendously exciting to have the creative freedom to develop my own show with Anne Sweeney, the Disney/ABC TV Group and Jeff, and to contribute to such a vibrant, innovative news division. I can't wait to be part of this incredibly talented, visionary team."
Several markets, including New York, Houston, and Chicago have cleared the 3 p.m. time slot for the show in 2012, which was previously held by "The Oprah Winfrey Show." "General Hospital" currently occupies that time slot in many markets across the country.
The network said in its statement that it "continues to support 'General Hospital,' and that it plans to launch 'The Chew' in September of this year and 'The Revolution' in January 2012." New time slots for all shows mentioned have not been revealed.
"I'm so excited to join the @abc family...finally the worst kept secret is out," Couric Tweeted on Monday.
The 54-year-old journalist left her post as anchor of the "CBS Evening News" on May 19 after nearly five years. Couric joined the "CBS Evening News" in September 2006, becoming the first woman to anchor a network television evening newscast by herself. Before that, she served as a host on the "Today" show, beginning in 1991.
"60 Minutes" correspondent Scott Pelley will take over as the new "CBS Evening News" anchor on June 6.
Disney/ABC TV Group is the parent company of OnTheRedCarpet.com.
