Kathy Griffin on mocking Sarah and Bristol Palin: 'It's just fun'
Kathy Griffin says she mocks Sarah Palin, former governor of Alaska, and her daughter Bristol Palin, who she has called the "white Precious," because "it's just fun."
The comedienne's nickname is based on Gabourey Sidibe's role as an overweight and abused teenage mother in the 2009 drama movie "Precious." Bristol Palin, a 20-year-old recent "Dancing With the Stars" contestant, gave birth to her son Tripp at age 18 and her teenage pregnancy was a controversial issue discussed during her mother's 2008 vice presidential campaign.
"I just love these ridiculous larger than life characters," Griffin said on "The Late, Late Show" on CBS recently. "I just think the whole family is a riot. I'm not safe in Wasilla, I know that."
"Half the fun is knowing that I'll irritate Elisabeth Hasselbeck and then maybe the other ladies on 'The View' and be a 'Hot Topic,'" Griffin added, referring to the ABC daytime talk show co-hosted by the conservative television personality, a former "Survivor" reality star.
Griffin mocked Bristol Palin's weight during her comedy set at the "VH1 Divas Salute the Troops" event, which aired earlier this month. The audience booed and Bristol Palin said the reaction "spoke volumes."
Griffin is no stranger to controversy. She spurred CNN to issue an apology after she uttered an expletive during last year's New Year's Eve special. However, the network has invited her back to co-host the event with Anderson Cooper on December 31. Cooper joked in a statement that he is "terrified."
