Katharine McPhee has a break-out role in the series "Smash" as Karen Cartwright and the actress recently dished what is ahead for characters on the musical series and also talked about her passionate involvement with the organization Malaria No More.

The series stars the "American Idol" season 5 runner-up as well as Broadway star Megan Hilty as actresses with a rivalry in a musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe on its way to Broadway. The show was renewed for a second season in March Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg serves as an executive producer on the show.

"I think what drew me to the show was being a part of something that hasn't been done before," McPhee told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "We have an amazing cast and Steven Spielberg as your boss is pretty great."

McPhee said after last week's episode, "things really start to get to going."

She adds that fans who watch Monday's episode will "definitely start feeling a shift in the stakes. The interactions between different characters. Like next week you'll see interaction between my boyfriend in the show, Dev (Raza Jaffrey), and the director (Jack Davenport) that you wouldn't expect to see. So there's a lot of little like cross character connecting that happens."

In December 2011, McPhee was named as a spokesperson for the Malaria No More organization. The non-profit organization aims to end death caused by malaria in Africa. Malaria No More also participates in the "Idol Gives Back" specials.

"We wrapped about two weeks ago and right after I left 'Smash' I went straight to Africa," McPhee said. "I like being a part of something that I can really feel like close to ending something."

"I went with the organization Malaria No More and we disturbed [mosquito] nets, we did lots of education programs, educating the people who we gave the nets to as to how to set up the nets properly," She added. "But the life saving tool there really is the nets. "

"Smash" airs Mondays at 10 p.m. on NBC.
