Kat Von D's reality show 'LA Ink' to end in September
Kat Von D's reality show, "LA Ink," is set to end next month after airing on the TLC cable network for the past four years.
The series depicted the 28-year-old's life as a tattoo artist in Los Angeles. The move comes weeks after Von D announced her split from fiance Jesse James, actress Sandra Bullock's ex-husband.
"TLC has decided that the current season of 'LA Ink' will be its last," a network spokesperson told OnTheRedCarpet.com in a statement on Thursday, August 18. "The network is proud of what the series has accomplished in its four seasons, following Kat Von D's journey as an artist from Miami to Los Angeles. The series finale will air September 15th at 10 p.m."
Ratings for "LA Ink" have dropped over the past year. Last week's episode averaged a 0.5 rating among the key demographic of viewers aged 18 to 49. During the same time in 2010, the show earned a 1.1 rating. In October of 2010, it dropped to 0.7.
Von D reacted to the news on Twitter, saying: "I love how me deciding to not continue doing 'LA Ink,' turns into being 'canceled.' Thanks @TLC. Regardless of everything I remain grateful."
Von D, who was born Katherine Drachenberg in Mexico, made her television debut on "Miami Ink" when it debuted on TLC in 2005. The show depicted the lives of five artists who open up a tattoo shop in South Beach. Von D left the show in 2007, a year before it ended, to co-produce and star in "LA Ink," its spin-off.
In recent years, Von D has launched a cosmetics line at Sephora retail stores and published two books - "High Voltage Tattoo" in 2009 and "The Tattoo Chronicles " in 2010.
She and James, a 42-year-old former reality star and CEO of custom motorcycles firm West Coast Choppers, became engaged earlier this year. In late July, she confirmed the two called it quits. Also that month, Von D showcased a new tattoo that depicts James in a fifth-grade portrait.
Von D has said that her high profile relationship with James, who admitted to cheating on Bullock while they were married, caused a lot of "turmoil" with friends and family. However, the two continue to communicate with one another, at least online.
The two sent cryptic messages to one another on Wednesday. Von D referenced James in a Tweet that contained a link to a photo of herself hugging an unidentified man. On his Tumblr page, James posted a message containing the word "missing" as well as photos of Von D, pictures of the two together in a photo booth and a scanned image of a note that appears to have been hand-written by her.
James also posted a photo of the what appeared to be the two kissing, alongside the words "@TheKatVonD *para siempre,*" which is Spanish for "Forever."
Earlier this week, TLC announced it had canceled another show - "Kate Plus 8," which depicted the lives of Pennsylvania mother Kate Gosselin and her eight children. The program's ratings had dropped since 2009, when Gosselin and her husband Jon divorced and he left the show.
