Kara DioGuardi to make Broadway debut as Roxie in 'Chicago' musical
Kara DioGuardi, a songwriter and former "American Idol" judge, is set to make her Broadway stage debut by starring as murderess Roxie Hart in a revival of the musical "Chicago."
Supermodel Christie Brinkley is currently playing the role and is set to end her run on June 19. Others who have portrayed Hart, who also dances in the Tony-winning show, include Brooke Shields, Ashlee Simpson, Michelle Williams and Melanie Griffith. Renee Zellweger played the character in a 2002 film.
"Former 'American Idol judge' Kara DioGuardi announced her Broadway debut in CHICAGO today!" a message on the Tony-winning musical's Facebook page said on Friday, June 17. "She joins the cast as Roxie Hart this September! Stay tuned."
DioGuardi, who is 40 and has also never acted in television or in film before, will star in the Tony-winning musical at New York's Ambassador Theatre from September 5 to October 30.
The songwriter and reality star, who has penned tracks for singers such as Pink and Enrique Iglesias, told Howard Stern on his Sirius XM radio show in late April that she always hated performing herself due to stage fright. DioGuardi sang with a former "American Idol" contestant and wore a bikini on the season 8 finale of "American Idol" in 2009.
"I wet myself," she told Stern. "I was no nervous. My manager was like, 'Honey, do not wear a white bathing suit. You'd better wear a black one."
DioGuardi says in her memoir, ""A Helluva High Note: Surviving Life, Love, and 'American Idol,'" that the experience helped her overcome her fear of singing and baring her body in public. She told Stern she later began to perform songs she co-wrote in public.
DioGuardi first appeared on"American Idol" in 2009, joining veteran judges Paula Abdul, Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson. DioGuardi left the show in 2010 amid declining ratings. FOX then revamped the series with two new judges - Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler.
DioGuardi is currently the head judge on Bravo's songwriting contest series "Platinum Hit," which also features the singer Jewel. It was announced in May that DioGuardi is set to receive a second Bravo show - a docu-series, tentatively titled "KARA."
