"Jurassic Park" may not be extinct after all, as a fourth film based on the hit dinosaur-themed franchise is reportedly in the works.

Steven Spielberg, who directed the first two films, has met at least twice with screenwriter Mark Protosevich to "kick around ideas for how to re-boot the Jurassic Park franchise," the Hollywood Reporter said recently.

However, Spielberg's representatives and Universal Studios have said discussions about a fourth movie have been "purely exploratory," the publication added.

The original 1993 movie starred Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern and Sam Neill and is based on the novel by Michael Crichton. It tells of a group of scientists who visit an island amusement park with cloned dinosaurs. When the more ferocious ones escape and run loose, hijinks ensue.

"Jurassic Park" earned more than $914 million worldwide. Its 1997 sequel made $618 million and a third movie, which was released in 2001 and featured Spielberg as its executive producer, earned $368 million in global box office sales. The franchise was adapted into a ride at Universal Studios' amusement parks in Florida and California.

Spielberg is also known for other well-known adventure and sci-fi movies such as "E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial" and the "Indiana Jones" franchise and also produced "Super 8," which was released last week.
