Julianne Hough, Diego Boneta talk 'Rock of Ages,' 1980s, parents (Video)
Julianne Hough and Diego Boneta, the youngest cast members of "Rock of Ages," probably found the 1980s-themed musical film to be a bit of a culture shock.
"It's kind of crazy to think that our parents did live in that time because we're thinking, 'Oh crap, what did they get up to, you know?'" Hough, who is 23 and was born in 1988, told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "It's fun to think about that. I've seen some of the things that my dad wore. He had the long hair. It was pretty great. I got my hair from my dad, actually."
In "Rock of Ages, "the cast performs songs by bands and singers most famous in the 1980s - such as Poison, Def Leppard and Pat Benatar. They were as known for their power ballads and rock anthems as they were for their flashy outfits and enormous hair - common trends of the era, especially among music artists.Boneta, a 21-year-old native of Mexico born in 1990, grew up listening to his parents rock albums.
"My parents were big '80s music fans, so growing up, I listened to U2, The Police, Queen and it got to a point where I knew all these songs before I even auditioned for the movie, which is awesome," he said.
Hough and Boneta play aspiring singers and loves interests in "Rock of Ages." Their characters quickly discover how hard it is to make it in the Los Angeles music scene, dominated by likes of rocker Stacee Jaxx, played by Tom Cruise.
Hough previously starred in the 2011 film "Footloose," a remake of a 1980s classic. She is also known for her run as a cast member on ABC's "Dancing With The Stars." Boneta said it was a "dream" to work with Cruise, as well as co-star Alec Baldwin, who plays the owner of a rock club under threat of being shut down, and director Adam Shankman.
Cruise said Boneta is "fantastic," telling OnTheRedCarpet.com: "The guy's so talented. Such a professional. Such a nice guy too, he and his family. It was great working with him."
