Josh Hutcherson talks playing Vanessa Hudgens' love interest in 'Journey 2' (Video)
Josh Hutcherson says it was "fun" to play Vanessa Hudgens' love interest in "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island."
The two dated in real life, around early 2011.
"Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" was released on February 10.
"My character, Sean, gets this distress signal from his grandfather, which he believes is coming from the mysterious island," Hutcherson told OnTheRedCarpet.com's Chris Balish. "So him, and his stepfather, Dwayne Johnson, go down there to find out what's going on and they discover this new place and they've got to get off the island before it sinks back down to the bottom of the ocean."
"So, race against time with giant lizards and flying bumblebees and very exciting stuff," he said. "It's life or death, honestly ... It's also that but it's also developing relationships between myself and my stepfather. And I have a love interest, which is Vanessa, of course, so that was a very fun relationship to play on as well."
He and Hudgens faced an awkward situation when they were asked about their relationship in a January interview with the Australian show "Today." Hutcherson responded by saying that they were dating at one point, but are now "really good friends."
Hutcherson made his comments about "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island" at the film's recent Los Angeles premiere. At the event, she wore a yellow, strapless Maria Lucia Hohan gown with stackable Le Vian diamond bangles (See more photos of Hudgens and others at the "Journey 2" premiere).
"I'm super proud of this movie," Hutcherson added. "I've been traveling the world, kind of getting it out there, so it's nice to be back in the states to promote it. I'm double-promoting right now. Half the day is 'Journey,' half the day's 'Hunger Games,' so it's very exciting and the characters kind of get confusing in my head."
The highly-anticipated 2012 film "The Hunger Games" is based on the first book in the trilogy of novels based around the character Katniss Everdeen, who will be played by "Winter's Bone" actress Jennifer Lawrence.
Everdeen lives in the post-apocalyptic North America, which is now called Panem. In the book, the Hunger Games are an annual televised event put on by the government in Capitol city, where a boy and a girl from each district fight to the death.
The film is set for release March 23, and the trailer gives away the first looks of Donald Sutherland as President Snow and longer glances at Lenny Kravitz as stylist Cinna, Woody Harrelson as their mentor Haymitch Abernathy and Elizabeth Banks, who takes on the role of Effie Trinket. Hutcherson has also appeared in the films "Journey to the Center of the Earth," "Bridge to Terbithia," "and the Oscar nominated "The Kids Are All Right."
