Jonah Hill: '21 Jump Street' is 'Bad Boys' meets John Hughes (Video)
Jonah Hill says the "21 Jump Street" movie is a cross between "Bad Boys" and a John Hughes film.
Hill, 28, stars in the new comedy flick alongside co-star Channing Tatum. "21 Jump Street" is based on a 1980s cop series starring Johnny Depp and hit theaters on Friday, March 16.
"The [old] show was like a very serious drama," Hill told OnTheRedCarpet.com co-host Rachel Smith at the recent premiere for the movie in Los Angeles. "Ours is 'Bad Boys' meets a John Hughes movie. It's a big action comedy."
"Bad Boys" was a 1995 film that starred Will Smith and Martin Lawrence as two hip detectives. John Hughes, who died in 2009, created cult teen company movies such as "Ferris Bueller's Day Off," "The Breakfast Club," "Sixteen Candles" and "Home Alone."
Hill is known for his roles in comedy films such as "Superbad" and was recently nominated for his first Oscar for his role in the drama film "Moneyball," which stars Brad Pitt. Hill returns to his comedic roots in "21 Jump Street," playing as an underachieving rookie cop sent to a local high school to go undercover as a student to try and take down a drug ring. Tatum plays his partner.
"21 Jump Street" also stars Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis, Dave Franco, Jake Johnson, Brie Larson and Ice Cube, who plays the police captain. It also features original cast members Depp and Holly Robinson Peete.
In October 2011, Hill and Tatum engaged in a Twitter war, battling to see who could get the most followers by November 2. The two appeared in videos asking fans for re-Tweets and to spread the word. The stunt was in part to promote the film and the winner posted the red band trailer.
Hill also Tweeted about the release of the film on Friday, encouraging fans to watch, "#21JumpStreet is in theaters starting TONIGHT at midnight! Go see it this weekend! Awesome action and super funny! Woo Hoo!"
