Jonah Hill says it took him five years to get the film "21 Jump Street" right.

The 28-year-old actor stars in the new comedy flick alongside Channing Tatum and is also credited as a co-writer. "21 Jump Street" is based on a 1980s cop series starring Johnny Depp and hit theaters on Friday, March 16.

"It took me five years to get it right," Hill told OnTheRedCarpet co-host Rachel Smith at the recent premiere of the film. "I just wanted to wait until it was the best version of the script before we went into it, and I'm glad we waited because I couldn't be more proud. I've been with this movie from age 23 to 28, so it's been a big part of my life and I can't believe it's actually coming out."

Hill also took to Twitter to express his excitement.

"Been working on #21JumpStreet for five years and we're 88% Fresh on Rotten Tomatoes! And it's out in theaters tonight at midnight!" he Tweeted on March 15.

Hill is known for his roles in comedy films such as "Superbad" and was recently nominated for his first Oscar for his role in the drama film "Moneyball," which stars Brad Pitt. Hill returns to his comedic roots in "21 Jump Street," playing as an underachieving rookie cop sent to a local high school to go undercover as a student to try and take down a drug ring. Tatum plays his partner.

"21 Jump Street" also includes Rob Riggle, DeRay Davis, Dave Franco, Jake Johnson, Brie Larson and Ice Cube, who plays the police captain. It also features original cast members Depp and Holly Robinson Peete.

Depp played Officer Tom Hanson on the 1980s series and makes a cameo in the new film as his old character. Peete has a larger role in "21 Jump Street" movie and is also playing her former part of Officer Judy Hoffs. She is also known for playing Christina on the CBS comedy "Mike & Molly" and was a co-host of the network's daytime series "The Talk" last year.
