Jon Hamm insults his 'Bridesmaids' character (Video)

05/12/2011 by Olivia Allin

Jon Hamm who's best known as Don Draper on AMC's "Mad Men" plays an unlikable character in the new female-driven Judd Apatow comedy, "Bridesmaids."

"I hope this isn't how Kristen feels about me, because I also play a kind of unrepentant douchebag," Hamm told Rachel Smith of OnTheRedCarpet.com "I was just happy to be asked to come be in the film and I worked with Kristen on 'Saturday Night Live' a couple times and I think she is so talented, beyond being incredibly funny, she is warm and a really talented actress."

The plot centers around Annie (Kristen Wiig) and her experiences as the Maid of Honor in her friend Lillian's (Maya Rudolph) wedding. In the flick, Hamm plays Wiig's boyfriend and the actress, who also co-wrote the script admit that she tried to make his character as unlikeable as possible.

"Oh yeah, we can say douchebag," Wiig confirmed to OnTheRedCarpet.com. "He is a huge douchebag and we wanted him to be as douchey as possible and we said he's gotta drive a Porsche (nothing against people with Porsches) and he played it to a tee. He's so funny in the movie."

The movie was written by Kristen Wiig and her friend Annie Mumolo, who are both graduates of the Groundlings Improvisational group. Paul Feig who created "Freaks and Geeks" directed the film and Judd Apatow ("Knocked Up," "Superbad") produced.

And while Wiig, Apatow and Feig are masters of comedy, Hamm insists that there is more to the film than laughs.

"That's what the movie does as well," Hamm explained, "it not only makes you laugh hysterically, it also has a tremendous amount of heart and I think that's the kind of movies that Judd makes and I think that's the kind of movie that Paul, who directed it make, aren't just people falling over and people bumping into each other, kind of slapstick comedies, they also really tell stories about friends and about relationships and I think that's the wonderful thing about this film."

Hamm, 40, gained global recognition from "Mad Men" and has since starred in films like "The Day the Earth Stood Still," "Stolen" and "The Town." After graduating from college, Hamm returned to his high school and taught acting briefly, one of his students was fellow "Bridesmaids" cast-mate Ellie Kemper, who currently plays the secretary on "The Office."

"In a room full of freshmen girls he was definitely just as handsome back then, and having this grown, tall man teach you theater, it was like having a hunk in the class," Kemper told the A.V. Club last year.

"Mad Men" has been postponed until 2012, but Hamm has kept busy with roles in the recent film "Sucker Punch" and the upcoming comedy, "Friends with Kids" which stars his "Bridesmaids" co-stars Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph, along with Megan Fox and Hamm's wife, "Kissing Jessica Stein" actress Jennifer Westfeld.

In the meantime, he's excited for audiences to see "Bridesmaids," which he thinks will be universally funny.

"I saw the movie three weeks ago and I started laughing 3 seconds in and I don't think I stopped laughing until the end. It's really, really funny," Hamm told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "Suffice to say, I hope it is a movie that people find universally funny."

"Bridesmaids" hit theaters on May 13, watch a trailer below.
