Johnny Depp to be honored with MTV Generation Award at 2012 MTV Movie Awards
Johnny Depp will be honored at the 2012 MTV Movie Awards on June 3 with the Generation Award, the network announced recently.
The actor will be presented with the award from the rock duo The Black Keys, who will perform a special rendition of their single "Gold on the Ceiling" in Depp's honor.
Depp is receiving the honor "For his exceptional contributions to the film industry and for entertaining generations of the MTV audience throughout his illustrious career," according to a statement from the network.
"Johnny Depp is a fearless, once-in-a-generation talent with a chameleon-like ability to inhabit any role," Stephen Friedman, President of MTV, said in a statement. "With years of astonishing performances, Johnny has truly earned this Generation Award, and we look forward to honoring him with a can't-miss tribute at this year's Movie Awards."
The "MTV Generation Award" is the highest honor given out at the "MTV Movie Awards." Past recipients include Reese Witherspoon, Sandra Bullock, Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, Tom Cruise and Jim Carrey.
Depp is known for his frequent collaborations with director Tim Burton in films like "Edward Scissorhands," "Sleepy Hollow," "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "Alice in Wonderland." He is also known for his role as Captain Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise.
The 48-year-old actor recently appeared in another Burton film, "Dark Shadows," and will next appear as Tonto in the "Lone Ranger" film adaptation. Depp was recently made an honorary member of the Comanche tribe, which is the tribe Tonto is said to be a part of in the film.
The "Lone Ranger" is directed by Gore Verbinski, who directed Depp in the first three "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies, and is produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, who also worked on the hit Disney franchise. The movie is set for release on May 31, 2013.
