John Travolta talks 'Savages,' 'throwback' menage et trois (Video)
John Travolta has nothing but praise for Oliver Stone, who directed him in "Savages," a new R-rated film that contains what the actor calls a "throwback" "menage a trois" three-way sexual relationship.
"He's terrific. He's a genius," Travolta said. "He wants you to do the best performance while he watches you like a hawk. Your performance is watched, every word, every cadence and he really forces you to do your best work and then you come up with the things he paid you for, which is your own interpretation. He wants that too. He definitely wants that. He's quite brilliant."
In "Savages," Blake Lively of "Gossip Girl" fame plays an American woman named O. She has two boyfriends, played by Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson, who are pot growers.
"[In the] late '60s, early '70s, free love and menages a trois were kind of ... the sexual revolution that was introduced at that time," Travolta told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "So this is a kind of throwback to it and I know it's still happening today as well. It just was very, kind of newsworthy in those days."
O gets herself kidnapped by members of a Mexican drug cartel, headed by Elena, who is portrayed by Salma Hayek. Benicio Del Toro and Demian Bichir play her cronies. Travola plays a corrupt DEA agent.
Stone told OnTheRedCarpet.com that he sought Travolta, Hayek and Del Toro for their roles, while he was unfamiliar with Lively, Kitsch and Johnson before casting the film.
He said that Kitsch is a "terrific leading man" and "did a great job" in the movie. The actor, known for previous roles in action movies such as "John Carter" and "Battleship," shows his bare bottom in "Savages" and told OnTheRedCarpet.com that he did not consider that to be a big deal.
"I think when you sign up to a film called 'Savages' and directed by Oliver Stone, you know what you're getting into, right?" he said.
"Savages" hits theaters on Friday, July 6.
