John Mellencamp and his estranged third wife are officially divorced.

The 59-year-old rock singer, known for songs such as "Hurts So Good," and Elaine Irwin, 41, separated in September 2010. They announced their split the following December and Mellencamp filed divorce papers in January of this year. The two are parents to two sons, Hud, 17, and Speck, 16.

The couple's divorce was finalized on August 12 in Indiana, People magazine reported on Monday, adding that they agreed to share joint legal custody of the boys, while their mother will retain primary physical custody and Mellencamp will pay child support and for their education.

The singer, who once went by John Cougar, and Irwin married in 1992. They met when she modeled for the cover of his album, "Whenever We Wanted," in 1991. Mellencamp also has three other daughters - Michelle, Teddi Jo and Justice - from two previous marriages.

Following news of the couple's divorce in January, it was reported that Mellencamp was dating actress that Meg Ryan. The two have not commented publicly.

Mellencamp recently performed at the Farm Aid 2011 concert in Kansas City, Kansas. The annual benefit event aims to raise awareness for small family farms and was co-founded by Mellencamp as well as Willie Nelson and Neil Young, who also performed at this year's event.

Mellencamp plans to tour other parts of the United States as well as Canada on his own in the fall, starting in October. Check out dates below. You can buy tickets to his "No Better Than This" tour, aimed at promoting his 2010 by the same name, on his website.
