Joel McHale named White House Correspondents' dinner performer (Poll)

02/14/2014 by Corinne Heller
Joel McHale, star of the NBC comedy show "Community" and host of the snarky E! pop culture commentary series "The Soup," has been named the entertainer at the annual celebrity-packed White House Correspondents' Association dinner this year.

The news was announced by the group on Friday, Feb. 14, ahead of the May 3 event.

"My material will be equally offensive to all & over within 30 min - just like a Congressional work year," McHale joked on Twitter, later adding: "I hope my wife clears the Secret Service background check. I don't want to embarrass her, but she has A LOT of priors. #WHCD."

The actor and comedy writer follows in the footsteps of TV hosts Conan O'Brien of TBS' "Conan" and Jimmy Kimmel of ABC's "Jimmy Kimmel Live!," who performed standup comedy for the White House Correspondents, who work for various TV, print, radio and online outlets, during the last two annual dinners.

The president and his wife attend the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner and a slew of celebrities and other political officials are also among the guests. The group was founded in 1914 and marks its centennial this year.

"We're thrilled that Joel will headline the dinner when we celebrate our centennial," WHCA President Steven Thomma said in a statement obtained by OTRC.com. "He's sharp, funny, and just the type of comic who can navigate the unique challenge of our dinner, making fun of Democrats, Republicans and especially the news media. Washington can use a little good-natured ribbing."
