Joel Edgerton on 'cool' movies versus 'The Odd Life of Timothy Green'

08/18/2012 by OnTheRedCarpet.com Staff

Joel Edgerton is best known for his role in adventure films like "Warrior" and "The Thing," but he was happy to put aside the thrills for his role in "The Odd Life of Timothy Green."

"There are so many movies out there that are 'cool' and 'cool' is often violence and car chase," Edgerton told OnTheRedCarpet.com during an August 10 interview. "It was really nice, actually, to be part of something that wasn't trying to be anything but open-hearted."

In the film, Edgerton plays Jim Green, who, along with his wife Cindy Green (played by Jennifer Garner), finds out that they are unable to conceive a child. To try to overcome their grief, the couple makes wishes for their ideal child and puts them in a box which they burry in their back yard.

The next day the couple wakes up to find a ten-year-old child (played by Cameron "CJ" Adams) named Timothy who claims to be their son. They soon realize the child is very unique.

The 38-year-old Australian actor said that he felt that the film's director/writer Peter Hedges was actually quite brave for making the emotional film.

"He is a rare kind of person in the movie business. He wants to reflect something that's important ... He wanted to make a movie that said that it was okay to be - to love, you know?" Edgerton said of Hedges. "I think it's kind of bold in a way. On one hand, it has a lot of soft edges and it's for everybody. But I think it's really kind of brave to make a movie like that right now."

The movie is based on a story by Ahmed Zappa, who has worked with Walt Disney, the film's studio, for years.

Edgerton is known for his roles in "Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones," "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith," "Animal Kingdom," "The Thing," "Warrior" and will portray Tom Buchanan in the upcoming film adaptation of "The Great Gatsby."

The actor has also had lesser-known roles in romantic comedies and dramas like "Separation City," "Open Window" and "The Waiting City."

"It's very important for me to show the softer side within some of the heavier material as well. It's like every character has some kind of softer center somewhere - as small as it might be. You're always searching for that empathy or that vulnerability," Edgerton said. "But thematically, I feel like this movie fits in with all of those movies because it seems like I'm always drawn to movies that have some really strong thematic thread about family," Edgerton said. "So I'm only just really starting to learn. I'm like, 'maybe this is what I gravitate toward?'"

Edgerton's brother Nash Edgerton also works in the film industry and worked as Ewan McGregor's stunt double in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy.
