Jim Parsons comes out as gay in New York Times article
"The Big Bang Theory" star Jim Parsons' sexuality was revealed in a recent article about the actor's latest role in the New York Times.
Though Parsons does not address or comment about being gay in the article, the Times writer notes, "Mr. Parsons is gay and in a 10-year relationship, and working with an ensemble again onstage was like nourishment, he said."
The article mainly focuses on the 39-year-old actor's stage work in the Broadway revival of "The Normal Heart" and the upcoming Broadway revival of "Harvey." In the play, Parsons plays the role of Elwood. The character was played by Jimmy Stewart in a 1950 film. Elwood, a middle-aged man, has an imaginary friend that is a 6 foot tall rabbit named Harvey.
"Elwood has such warmth, and wants nothing more than to connect with other people, whereas my nine-month-a-year job is a character who says things like, 'If you don't mind, I'd like to stop listening to you and talk now,'" Parsons told the New York Times. "The jump-out-of-bed happiness I feel transcends any nerves about taking on a history-laden role."
Parsons won the 2011 Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series for his role as physicist Sheldon Cooper in "The Big Bang Theory," marking the actor's second win and third nomination for the same part since the CBS comedy series began in 2007.
The actor, who is from Texas, has an MFA in Acting from the University of San Diego and began his on-screen career less than a decade ago, appearing in an episode of the series "Ed" in 2002. He later landed a recurring role on the show "Judging Amy" in 2005 before starring in "The Big Bang Theory."
Parsons' outing in a low-key fashion is similar to other actors' recent declarations about their sexuality like Zachary Quinto, who first came out as a gay man in an October New York Times article, and "White Collar" actor Matt Bomer, who subtly came out in a speech at the Steve Chase Humanitarian Awards in February, according to E! News. During the speech Bomer thanked his "beautiful family" and casually mentioned his rumored partner Simon Halls by name as well as his three children.
