Jessica Chastain talks 'Lawless' co-stars and being mother hen on set - See video
Jessica Chastain is a self-admitted fan of film and says she tends to "geek out" while working and that includes working on set of "Lawless" with Tom Hardy. The actress talked to OTRC.com about being the mother hen on set with the boys and taking on historical roles.
"I started in this business because I'm a huge fan of cinema. I love certain actors, I love certain directors, I geek out all the time because I'm so excited to work with people and that's what it was like for me on this film," Chastain told OTRC.com in a satellite interview earlier this week.
"Every film I do I'm always wondering like, 'Ok well, who am I going to share my scenes with?' So to do this film and share my scenes with Tom Hardy was phenomenal," she added. "I saw him in 'Bronson' and I thought he was such an exciting actor that I knew he would bring out a great performance."
"Lawless" is set in Virginia during the Prohibition era. Shia LaBeouf plays the youngest brother of Forrest and Howard Bondurant, played by British actor Tom Hardy, last seen as the villain Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," and Jason Clarke.
The three run a bootlegging business that comes under threat by local authorities. Guy Pearce stars as Special Agent Charlie Rakes, while Chastain plays Forrest's love interest. LaBeouf's character romances Bertha, a preacher's daughter, played by Mia Wasikowska.
"They were always roughhousing and playing around," Chastain said of LaBeouf, Hardy and Clarke. "Sometimes I would get involved with you know the playing around and joking around but for the most part it was like, 'Boys, calm down. Now it's time to work. Shake hands and make up. Okay, we all love each other, let's go back to work.'"
Despite the occasional roughhousing, Chastain added that the three were gentlemen to her on set.
"They treated me very special. They were always such gentlemen around me and I did feel kind of like the mother hen to&or the Lucy to 'The Lost Boys' absolutely," she said.
Playing a character from a different era is nothing new for Chastain who has played historical characters in "The Help," "The Tree of Life," and "The Debt."
"I love playing characters that are different from myself and I think that's why I play characters from different time periods," Chastain explained. "There's so much that you can be informed with, the costumes, and I definitely was so with Maggie."
"I love history. I love researching. When I get a role that's one of the first things I do. I just want to fill myself up with knowledge of where that character might have come from," She added. "But it's not just even reading about the history of the time, which of course I do, but I also love learning about the music of the time, listening to that, thinking of the food of the time, what someone would have done for fun. "
Chastain, 35, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role for "The Help." She has five films lined up for the next few years including "Tar" with James Franco and Mila Kunis and "Zero Dark Thirty" directed by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow.
"Lawless" hit theaters on August 29. Check out the trailer below.
