'Jersey Shore's Deena Cortese gets 2-year bar ban
"Jersey Shore" cast member Deena Cortese was recently banned from a New Jersey bar for alleged drunk behavior that got her arrested, while the establishment was slapped with a $15,000 fine for serving her alcohol while she was "visibly intoxicated."
On June 10, the 25-year-old was arrested for disorderly conduct after she ran from the Spicy Cantina & Mexican Grill in Seaside Heights into a nearby street and started dancing in the intersection, police said, adding that at one point, she grabbed the trunk of a car.
The popular MTV reality show is mostly filmed in Seaside Heights and specifically depicts a group of outgoing roommates who like to drink and party. The cable network recently announced that "Jersey Shore" will end after the upcoming sixth season.
Cortese later pleaded guilty to failing to use a sidewalk and paid a $106 fine and $33 in court costs, avoiding a criminal conviction. New Jersey's Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control said on Thursday, September 13, that it had reached a settlement over the matter with the Spicy Cantina, which would be fined $15,000. Cortese, the group said, is banned from the bar for two years.
The group and the New Jersey Office of The Attorney General said in a joint statement, obtained by OTRC.com, that Cortese was "served alcohol at the establishment while visibly intoxicated."
The authorities said that according to police, on the day of her arrest, "Cortese was observed running out of Spicy and into the street," then began "dancing in the intersection and appeared to be intoxicated after losing her balance several times."
She then walked down the road and "grabbed onto the trunk of a car and continued to dance," the statement said. "Police said her behavior was seriously restricting the flow of the traffic and then placed her under arrest. Following her arrest, she told police that she had been drinking through the course of the day."
The authorities said investigators from New Jersey's Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control found that Cortese and several other people, including members of an MTV film crew, were at the Spice Cantina for approximately 90 minutes that day.
"During that time, Cortese was observed to be walking on the bar, falling on the ground and standing on a red bench at a table of random guests," the statement said. "At one point, Cortese left the premises with an alcoholic beverage, walked onto the boardwalk and returned to the bar a short time later."
"In addition to pleading to the intoxication charges, Spicy also admitted to serving Cortese drinks that she did not order, which is illegal," it added. "Four staff members from Spicy submitted a letter to the ABC dated June 10 explaining that Cortese was served one alcoholic drink, a vodka and club soda, then was deemed to be intoxicated by the bar management."
The statement added that the document submitted by the bar workers said that Cortese was cut off at one point, but that she was later "served several shots of water, which she thought contained alcohol. She was also served non-alcoholic drink mix with fruit garnish. She drank multiple glasses without realizing that she was not drinking alcohol."
Cortese and reps for the Spicy Cantina have not commented about the settlement.
Season 6 of "Jersey Shore" premieres on October 4. MTV says Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi," the show's breakout star, who recently gave birth to her first child, will still appear on the series but live separately from her cast members. She will also continue to appear in its spin-off, "Snooki & JWOWW," which has been renewed for season 2.
