Jeremy Renner addresses gay rumors
Jeremy Renner's career went into fast drive after getting an Oscar nomination for his role in the 2008 film "The Hurt Locker," but his newest role in "Bourne Legacy" will only bring more fame and subsequently, more rumors.
The actor, who has been romantically linked in the tabloids to Jessica Simpson and his "Avengers" co-star Scarlett Johansson, has also faced speculation about his sexual orientation.
"I want my personal life to be personal, and it's not [expletive] true," Renner told the Hollywood Reporter. "And I don't care if you're talking about things that are true, you're still talking about my personal life. How about I go peek in your window, take what underwear you wore last night, whose husband you were [expletive], and shove that in the megaphone throughout your neighborhood? How does that feel?"
Renner told the industry magazine that he had a five-year relationship with a woman in his 20's and a four and a half year relationship with actress Jes Macallan, which ended two years ago.
The private actor also said he once got choked by a stranger on the street who questioned Renner's sexuality over a scarf.
"This guy chokes me with the scarf I was wearing," Renner said. "He called me a [epithet for gay men]. 'cause I was wearing a scarf! Then he shoved my sister and I got behind him and I choked him out - put him to sleep."
"The Bourne Legacy" is the first movie in the series without Damon playing the part of the title character and focuses on a new CIA operative named Aaron Cross, played by Renner, who revealed in November that his character "ends up having a bunch of different names."
The film, which is slated for release on August 3, 2012, will be the fourth in the franchise, will also star Joan Allen, Albert Finney Ed Norton and Rachel Weisz. Damon, who appeared in three films in the series, is apparently embarrassed to have been involved with the franchise's last installment, "The Bourne Ultimatum."
The Bourne franchise has earned over $1 billion worldwide and according to GQ, earned Damon an estimated $20 million. Renner earned a reported $5 million for his appearance in the upcoming film.
"It was a game-changer in anonymity," Renner said of the role. "I had to consider how this was going to affect everyone I love - especially myself. The star thing, the celebrity thing is new to me. I don't want to be a good celebrity, a good [expletive] star. I want to be a good human being."
Renner recently appeared another spy film - the fourth "Mission Impossible" movie, "Ghost Protocol," which sees Tom Cruise reprising his role as Ethan Hunt.
The 40-year-old California native, known for his roles in films such as "The Hurt Locker," also recently filmed "The Avengers." He plays Hawkeye, part of an extensive ensemble of superheroes, alongside actors such as Robert Downey Jr., who reprises his role as Iron Man, and Johansson, who slips back into her "Iron Man 2" cat suit to portray the Black Widow. "The Avengers" is set for release on May 4, 2012.
