Jenny McCarthy defends cousin Melissa over weight criticism by film critic

02/15/2013 by Kristina Lopez

Jenny McCarthy defended her cousin, "Bridesmaids" and "Identity Thief" star Melissa McCarthy, in a new interview when asked about the criticism Melissa received about her weight by a movie critic.

In his review of the film "Identity Thief," New York Observer movie critic Rex Reed points out McCarthy's weight several times by calling her "a female hippo," "tractor-sized" and "a gimmick comedian who has devoted her short career to being obese and obnoxious with equal success."

"I don't have the whole story, but, I do know that, after being in this business 20 years, it's really crummy that you get attacked in your personal life in general," Jenny McCarthy told E! News in a recent interview.

"That's obnoxious in itself," McCarthy told the outlet after hearing some of the quotes from the review. "For anyone to attack like that, it's just wrong and hurtful, and it doesn't do anyone any good -- not even Rex Reed, you know?"

Jenny McCarthy ended her remarks by saying, "She's very, very talented and people know that, so he can go to hell."

The report notes that "Bridesmaids" director Paul Feig also defended McCarthy in a Tweet on February 8. He wrote, "For his catty and school bully name-calling of the supremely talented Melissa McCarthy, I cordially invite Mr. Rex Reed to go [expletive] himself."

Despite Reed's criticism of the film and McCarthy's weight, "Identity Thief" opened No. 1 at the weekend box office last weekend and has earned $41.9 million so far, according to BoxOfficeMojo.com.

Melissa McCarthy, who also stars on the CBS series "Mike & Molly," has an upcoming role in the film "The Heat" with Sandra Bullock. That movie is set for release on April 5.

Jenny McCarthy currently hosts "The Jenny McCarthy" show on VH1. The show premiered on February 8 and airs on Fridays at 10:30 p.m.
