Jennifer Lopez told Ricky Gervais she would 'kill' him if he joked about her
Ricky Gervais caught a lot of flack after he hosted the Golden Globes on Sunday from celebrities that didn't find his jokes about them very funny.
Now, Jennifer Lopez says that before she was set to present back stage, she threatened the comedian to make sure she wouldn't be the butt of his jokes.
"I'm backstage with Alec [Baldwin], we're about to walk out, and Ricky shows up," Lopez tells Access Hollywood. "I say, 'Listen! I will kill you, do you understand? I am from New York. My husband fights, we fight, we both fight, we will beat you up after the show."
Gervais did end up taking a jab at Lopez with a joke about her spending habits. The actress and new "American Idol" judge admits that the atmosphere in the room when Gervais delivered a few of his more stinging zingers was not too friendly.
"I'm sure in his mind it was all in good fun. But in the room, being in the room it was like, eek," she said.
Robert Downey Jr. and Tom Hanks were among the few celebrities that shot back at Gervais during the telecast on January 16.
During the show, Gervais introduced Downey Jr. by giving a list of his recent successful film credits before ending with, "But many of you in this room probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and Los Angeles County Jail."
Robert Downey Jr. didn't take kindly to Gervais' joke. "Aside from the fact that it's been hugely mean-spirited with mildly sinister undertones, I'd say the vibe of the show has been pretty good so far, wouldn't you?"
Hollywood Foreign Press Association president Philip Berk tells The Hollywood Reporter that he thinks the comedian "definitely crossed the line."
"Some of the things were totally unacceptable. But that's Ricky," he told the industry paper. "Any of the references to individuals is certainly not something the Hollywood Foreign Press condones."
