Jennifer Lawrence: 'Silver Linings Playbook' audition was 'about sex,' brother read lines
Jennifer Lawrence's audition and preparation techniques for "Silver Linings Playbook" were far from ordinary -- not only did the actress try out for the part remotely via Skype, but she also read lines containing sex-related words with her brother.
In the film, which was released on Wednesday, November 21, the 22-year-old star plays a widow who falls in love with her bipolar neighbor, played by Bradley Cooper, who wants to reconnect with his ex-wife. Her Skype audition marked the first time director David O. Russell, who helmed the Oscar-nominated film "The Fighter," had used the video call program to find actors for his projects.
"It was especially weird because we were doing all the jogging scenes so I'm just jogging in front of my computer," Lawrence told OTRC.com correspondent Tony Cabrera at the film's recent Los Angeles premiere. "Like if anybody looked in the window, they would've thought I lost my mind. I'm not good at Skyping, I'm not good at auditioning so [it's] kind of a miracle."
Lawrence, who was back in her native state of Kentucky at the time, needed a person to run lines with. Que one of her two older brothers, Ben, 31.
"The entire conversation and the audition was about sex and we were both really awkward about it, so we just replaced every word, sex word with 'blank,'" she added. "So I just prepared with my brother, going, 'Remember when I said you could blank me.' (laughs). Thanks Ben."
The actress joked to Rolling Stone that year that while she lives in Los Angeles now, "little redneck things still come out," such as being "attracted to my brother," without naming which one or elaborating.
Lawrence is one of the most sought-after female stars today. She earned her first Golden Globe and Oscar nominations in 2011 for the movie "Winter's Bone" and plays Katniss in "The Hunger Games" films.
Just before she walked the red carpet at the Golden Globes, Ben sang her praises in an interview with Kentucky TV station WAVE, saying: "It's amazing to turn on the news to see her being mentioned with Natalie Portman, Nicole Kidman. Just to be in that category is something I never dreamed of and I'm sure she didn't either when it all began."
Lawrence has a boyfriend - her "X-Men: First Class" co-star Nicholas Hoult. The two began dating in January 2011, according to Us Weekly.
Lawrence is considered by many to be an "unconventional" Hollywood actress. For one thing, the slim but healthy-looking actress refuses to "starve herself" for an action role.
"I don't want little girls to be like, 'Oh, I want to look like Katniss, so I'm going to skip dinner.' That's something I was really conscious of during training, when you're trying to get your body to look exactly right," she told Elle in the magazine's December 2012 cover story interview.Reporting by Tony Cabrera, correspondent of KABC Television's entertainment show "On The Red Carpet" (check for local TV listings).
