Jennifer Lawrence signs on to star in 'Hunger Games'
Jennifer Lawrence, 20, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in "Winter's Bone" has signed on to star in Lionsgate's upcoming adaptation of "Hunger Games," based on Suzanne Collins' young adult novel, reports E! Online.
Lawrence will play the "plucky protagonist" Katniss Everdeen who lives in the post-apocalyptic North America, which is now called Panem. The Hunger Fames are an annual televised event put on by the government in Capitol city, where a boy and a girl from each district fight to the death.
Lawrence's rep confirmed that the actress is "super excited" for the role.
On Wednesday, it was confirmed that "Weeds" star Hunter Parrish is in talks to play the male lead of Peeta Mellark. When E! Online asked Parrish, 23, who he would want as his heroine, the actor mentioned Lawrence first.
"If it's Jennifer [Lawrence], man, sign me up!" Parrish told E! Online. "I think if it ended up being Hailee Steinfeld or Saoirse [Ronan] or who's the other one? Abigail Breslin. Then it would be weird. It would be really weird."
Lawrence also stars alongside Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster in "The Beaver," which is set for release on May 20, 2011. Lawrence joked that Gibson should have won an Oscar for the way that he read the script.
