Jennifer Lawrence compares 'The Hunger Games' to the Kardashians
When it comes to having a "Hunger Games" style show in our time, Jennifer Lawrence thinks we're not too far from it with reality shows like "Keeping Up With the Kardashians."
The 21-year-old actress stars in "The Hunger Games" as the lead character, Katniss Everdeen. Katniss is a young girl who lives in a post-apocalyptic future where a boy and girl from various districts are chosen and taken to a massive area where they must survive and fight to death. This annual event, dubbed The Hunger Games, takes place in front of cameras, who broadcast their every move to viewers.
"I was watching the Kardashian girl getting divorced, and that's a tragedy for anyone. But they're using it for entertainment, and we're watching it," Lawrence told Parade Magazine about Kim Kardashian, who divorced from Kris Humphries after 72 days. "The books hold up a terrible kind of mirror: This is what our society could be like if we became desensitized to trauma and to each other's pain."
The film is an adaptation of the popular novel "The Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins is slated to hit theaters on March 23, 2012. It also stars Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.
Lawrence told the magazine she's very fond of her character. "I love Katniss. She doesn't have a lot, but she's happy, and she faces death out of love for her family," the actress said. "She doesn't want to be a hero, but she becomes the symbol for a revolution, a kind of futuristic Joan of Arc."
In a previous interview with Lawrence, she explained to us that she wishes she was more like Katniss.
"I wish that I did [have her strength]. She's strong," Lawrence told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "I would've been like [in a sheepish voice] 'I volunteer.' Cried and like cried the whole train ride and just stayed on my podium when they counted down [in the arena] and just cried. It would've been different."
