Jennifer Aniston turned down 'SNL' offer for 'Friends'
Jennifer Aniston says she was once invited to join the NBC sketch comedy series "Saturday Night Live" but that she turned down the offer for a role on "Friends," the sitcom that made her an international star.
She and Adam Sandler, an "SNL" alum, revealed the story on a recent episode of "The Oprah Winfrey Show" in an interview to promote their new romantic comedy film "Just Go With It."
"We wanted Aniston to be on the show with us," Sandler said. "I remember being on the ninth floor where Lorne Michaels' office was, and seeing Jen come in. I was like, 'Oh my God, there's Aniston. Is she about to be on our show?' I was like, wow I'm going to be working with Aniston and then, just going, 'She said no? She's gonna do that 'Friends'? What the hell is 'Friends?' That was the truth."
When Winfrey asked Aniston if Michaels, the creator and executive producer of "SNL," made her an offer, the actress said: "Yeah," adding: "I had this show 'Friends' coming up. But they thought I was making a huge mistake."
"Friends" aired on NBC between 1994 and 2004 and starred Aniston as Rachel Green, a character whose layered, shoulder-length "Rachel" haircut was copied worldwide. Aniston said last month that her trendsetting haircut she donned on the comedy series was the "ugliest" 'do she has ever seen.
Since "Friends" ended, Aniston has gone on to star in mostly romantic comedy films, such as "The Bounty Hunter" and "The Switch." "Just Go With It," features a cameo from Heidi Montag of the MTV reality series "The Hills" and is set for release on Feb. 11, 2011, three days before Valentine's Day.
In the film, Sandler plays a plastic surgeon who tells women he is married to avoid commitment. Some of them seem to like that, but when a woman he actually likes finds his fake wedding ring, he says that his marriage is not working out. Aniston plays his office manager who agrees to pose as his soon-to-be ex.
Actor Rupert Everett mocked Aniston's career in December in a BBC 4 radio interview. Aniston has not responded publicly.
