Jay-Z is one of the most famous and successful rappers in the music industry but it still took a little while for a New York City subway passenger to recognize the music mogul while riding next to him on the train.

A clip form Jay-Z's documentary called "Where I'm From: JAY-Z Barclays Center Documentary" released on Tuesday, December 4, shows the rapper chatting with a woman riding the subway surrounded by a large crowd and cameras. The exchange, which took place on October 6, can be seen in the video below starting at the 19:28 minute mark.

The woman asks, "Are you famous?"

"Yes. Not very famous, you don't know me," Jay-Z, whose real name is Sean Carter, replied. "But I'll get there someday."

The rapper later introduces himself as Jay and explains that he works in music. The woman says her name is Ellen. Us Weekly identifies the woman as Ellen Grossman, a New York City artist. Jay-Z explained he was on his way to his eighth and final show at the Barclays Arena in his home borough of Brooklyn.

"And you're taking the subway. I'm proud of you," the woman in the video tells Jay-Z. She later asks for his name again and Jay-Z tells her "Jay, Jay Z."

"Oh, you're Jay-Z," the woman says. "I know about Jay-Z!"

The rapper, who turned 43 on Tuesday, is part owner of the Brooklyn Nets. The team plays at the Barclays Center. He performed eight sold-out shows at the arena earlier this year as part of its opening. His wife, singer Beyonce, joined him at the eighth and final show.

Check out the video of Jay-Z below with the conversation at the 19:28 minute mark.
