Jared Leto talks 'Dallas Buyers Club,' gaining weight after 30-lb loss

11/01/2013 by Joseph Apodaca

Jared Leto takes on a role unlike any he has before in the new drama film "Dallas Buyers Club."

In the film, which hit theaters on Nov. 1, Leto plays Rayon, a transgender woman and AIDS patient who seeks the help of Ron Woodroff, played by Matthew McConaughey and Dr. Eve Saks, played by Jennifer Garner, to combat his disease. Leto and McConaughey underwent extreme transformations for their roles, appearing thin and weathered to portray their characters.

Leto told ABC News he lost 30 pounds -- a third of his body weight -- to play the role.

OTRC.com caught up with Leto at the recent Hollywood Film Awards in Los Angeles (see winners), where he spoke about having to wear a skirt for the role and what pressure, if any, is he feeling with the Oscar buzz surrounding his role in the film.

Check out three highlights from the interview with Leto below and watch the full interview above.

1. Looking back on your career, you have to be pretty proud of this moment?

"It's an incredible moment. I mean, it's insane what happens when people find out you look great in a skirt. You know, you get invited to all the parties, so I'm really happy."

2. Is there pressure looking towards Oscar season with the buzz surrounding your performance?

"This is absolutely nuts. I never expected in a million years to be here. I fell in love with the role, I knew it was special and it was an opportunity to see what I was made of. It was an opportunity to contribute in a really deep and meaningful way to a very, very special story. That was important to me, so I'm glad I had the chance."

3. How does it feel to have finally gained some weight back?

"It feels wonderful. You know, it's great to be back here with some hindsight. And not just because of the weight but, just to appreciate the journey. It's the always the most enjoyable one but the further you get from it, the more fun it seems."
