Janet Jackson is moving her career behind the lens and recently signed on as an executive producer of a documentary.

The documentary, titled "Truth," will focus on the lives of transgender people living around the world, according to The Associated Press.

Brainchild Films announced on June 4 that Jackson was working on the documentary and would also appear in the film via some of the on-camera interviews. The documentary begins production this summer.

"All people are very important to me," Jackson said in a statement, according to The Advocate. "I've been fortunate to make friends and learn about very different lives."

"'Truth' is our small chance to ask that you try and understand someone who lives their life in a way that is a little bit different from yours, even though all of our hearts are the same," she added. "We want to stop the hate and find understanding."

"Truth" will be directed by Robert Jason, who previously directed a documentary for The Style Network on four transgender New Yorkers. He says "Truth" will feature stories from throughout North America, Europe, Australia and Latin America. The film does not yet have a release date.

The 46-year-old has starred in several films and won five Grammy Awards. She was last seen in the 2011 film "For Colored Girls." The singer also recently became a spokesperson for NutriSystem and released a book called "True You: A Journey to Finding and Loving Yourself," which is about her body struggles and advice regarding dieting and fitness.
