Janet Jackson joins billion dollar club: How she did it

05/23/2013 by Daniel Reynolds

Janet Jackson is now a billionaire.

The 47-year-old entertainer's net worth has now reached $1 billion, according to Variety. She joins an elite group of moguls that have reached this financial highwater mark, among them retail executive Wissam Al Mana, whom she married in a private ceremony in 2012.

Jackson amassed the majority of her fortune from her successful career as a singer. Cumulative sales from albums "Control," "Janet" and "Rhythm Nation 1814" garnered her $260 million, with an additional $81 million accrued from music and publishing fees.

The "All For You" singer's world tours were also lucrative, adding $458 million to her net worth, with an additional $81.5 million from licensing and sponsorship fees.

Jackson's star turns in films such as "Nutty Professor II: The Klumps," "Why Did I get Married?" and "For Colored Girls" also contributed $304 million to her wealth.

Jackson first entered the limelight as the youngest member of The Jackson 5, a 1970s musical group comprised of members of her family. Her career as a singer, actress and entertainer spans several decades.

The billion dollar club, which boasts such entertainment luminaries as Oprah, Steven Spielberg and Madonna, also includes her late brother Michael Jackson, whose estate was posthumously valued at least $1 billion, according to Billboard.
