The stars of "X-Men: First Class" realize that the film will have to live up to a lot of fan hopes and internet speculation.

The movie is the prequel to the hit Marvel comic book series about mutant superheroes and hit theaters on June 3. It depicts the characters when they were younger, as opposed to recent "X-Men" films.

"I think the expectations are high, they generally are with 'X-Men' fans and comic books fans in general," Michael Fassbender, who plays Erik Lensherr/Magneto in the film, told OnTheRedCarpet.com in a recent satellite interview. "They're very passionate about the material, very loyal and very vocal, and so, you know it's nice to have that pressure. We [he and co-star James McAvoy] both enjoy the fear element, in terms of keeping you on your toes."

McAvoy, who plays Charles Xavier/Professor X, added: "There's nothing wrong with setting the bar really high. I think sometime the big summer movies can be complacent, because you just go it's all about the spectacle, it's all about the money we spend on the action sequences and stuff."

"Don't get me wrong, we've totally done that to a great degree," McAvoy said. "But I think the bar was set high in terms of quality in all areas and hopefully, I think, we've addressed that."

The film tells of how Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr were once friends and how they later turned into Professor X, who ends up leading the "X-Men" in a fight against evil, and his adversary, Magneto.

"X-Men: First Class also stars January Jones of "Mad Men" as Emma Frost, Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, Kevin Bacon as Sebastian Shaw, Zoe Kravitz as Angel Salvador and Rose Byrne as Dr. Moira MacTaggert. Nicholas Hoult plays Beast, Jason Flemyng as Azazel, Lucas Till as Havok, Oliver Platt as Man in Black and Edi Gathegi of "Twilight" fame portrays Darwin.

So are the "X-Men: First Class" stars hoping for a sequel?

"Yeah if it makes some money, which I think it deserves to. We're very, very proud of it," McAvoy said. "I think the idea is to do a couple more movies so yeah you'll be seeing us."
