James Franco: Andy Serkis played ape in pajamas (Video)
James Franco is touted as the biggest star in the big budget prequel "Rise of the Planet of the Apes," but the actor thinks that the visual effects company and actor Andy Serkis should get most of the credit for the film.
"Andy had to wear gray pajamas and wires and he had a camera on an arm pointed at his face," Franco told OnTheRedCarpet.com co-host Chris Balish at the film's recent Los Angeles premiere.
"You'd think that would get in the way of believing him as an ape, but his behavior was so realistic that your imagination takes over," he added. "I think Andy and Weta, the effects company, should get top billing for this - I don't know why I am!"
"Rise of the Planet of the Apes," which hit theaters on August 5, is a prequel to the film franchise, which depicts the power struggle of apes whose intelligence is boosted via human experimentation. Serkis stars as Caesar, the leader of the apes, while Franco portrays scientist Will Rodman.
The film also stars John Lithgow, "Slumdog Millionaire" actress Freida Pinto and Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy in the "Harry Potter" films - the last of which was released last month.
The visual effects team for "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" uses performance-capture technology and won Academy Awards for all three "Lord of the Rings" films and "King Kong."
Franco rose to fame on Judd Apatow's TV series "Freaks and Geeks." He earned an Oscar nomination for his role in the 2010 movie "127 Hours" and also appeared in the 2011 fantasy comedy film "Your Highness."
Franco can also be seen in the new movie "Oz the Great and Powerful" alongside Mila Kunis and Zach Braff and will soon film scenes for at least one upcoming episode of the ABC soap opera "General Hospital." The actor has appeared on the show on and off since 2009.
