Jada Pinkett Smith clarifies stance on Will Smith open marriage rumor
If these Facebook walls could talk... oh wait, they do! Jada Pinkett Smith is clearing the air about the persistent rumors that she and actor Will Smith have an open marriage, which were refueled by a recent interview with HuffPost Live. In the interview, she had said, "Will is his own man." In response to these rumors, the "Collateral" actress posted an update on Facebook posing a series of questions, which were meant to elucidate "the relationship between trust and love and how they co-exist." "Do we believe loving someone means owning them?" the 41-year-old actress queried. "Do we believe that ownership is the reason someone should 'behave'? Do we believe that all the expectations, conditions, and underlying threats of 'you better act right or else' keep one honest and true? Do we believe that we can have meaningful relationships with people who have not defined nor live by the integrity of his or her higher self? What of unconditional love? Or does love look like, feel like, and operate as enslavement? Do we believe that the more control we put on someone the safer we are? What of TRUST and LOVE?" The "Scream 2" actress and mother of two concluded her post with an amendment to her previous statement to HuffPost Live. "Here is how I will change my statement...Will and I BOTH can do WHATEVER we want, because we TRUST each other to do so," she clarified. "This does NOT mean we have an open relationship...this means we have a GROWN one." Past rumor about Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith This is not the first time the celebrity couple has publicly addressed rumors concerning the stability of their relationship. The Smiths released a joint statement in August 2011, repudiating reports that the pair had separated and Jada was having an affair with singer and "Hawthorne" co-star Marc Anthony. "Although we are reluctant to respond to these types of press reports, the rumors circulating about our relationship are completely false," the couple said in a joint statement obtained by OnTheRedCarpet.com. "We are still together, and our marriage is intact." Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith married in December 1997 and have two children together. Their 14-year-old son Jaden starred in the 2010 summer hit remake of "The Karate Kid" and will co-star with his father in the forthcoming science fiction film, "After Earth." The couple also has a daughter Willow, 12, who is pursuing a music career. Will Smith has a 20-year-old son named Willard Christopher Smith III, nicknamed Trey, from a previous marriage to Sheree Zampino that ended in divorce in 1995. Smith and Pinkett Smith first met on the set of Will Smith's hit 90s sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air." In the past, the couple has spoken openly about their dedication to making their marriage work, in order to avoid divorce. "What I found is divorce just can't be an option," Will Smith told Ellen DeGeneres during a May 2008 appearance on "The Elen DeGeneres Show." "It's really that simple. And I think that's the problem with L.A. -- there are so many options. So a huge part of the success for [Jada] and I is that we just removed the other options."
