Jackie Evancho, former 'America's Got Talent' contestant, sets Billboard record
Jackie Evancho is a 10-year-old who can compete with some big talent. The young singer, who blew away judges with her powerful Operatic voice during the fifth season of "America's Got Talent", recently set a Billboard record with the release of her album "O Holy Night."
The album debuted in the No. 2 spot on the Billboard 200 album chart, selling 239,000 copies, which makes Evnacho the top-selling debut artist of 2010 so far, according to a press release on her official website. The strong opening also makes her the youngest female solo artist to debut on the charts with an album in the top 10.
"Jackie Evancho is one of the purest and finest vocalists I've ever heard, and the initial response to her debut release has been phenomenal," Steve Barnett, Chairman of Columbia Records said in a statment.
The young singer beat out a Rihanna, who fell to number three with the debut of her fifth album, "Loud".
So who was responsible for keeping Evancho out of the top spot? None other than "X-Factor" runner-up and chart success Susan Boyle, who sold another 335,000 copies of her second album "The Gift".
Boyle set a record last week when "The Gift" debuted in first place, making her "the first woman, and only other artist besides the Beatles and the Monkees, to land two straight No. 1 albums within a calendar year in both England and the U.S.," according to MTV.
