J.R. Martinez talks 'DWTS' disappointment, says he'll 'bust his butt'

11/01/2011 by Nichole Hamilton

J.R. Martinez says he's going to "bust his butt" in week 8 if he's not eliminated from "Dancing with the Stars" after his week 7 performance.

The 28-year-old army veteran and "All My Children" actor, and partner Karina Smirnoff, 33, received a score of 25 out of 30 from the judges for their spooky, Ghostbusters Tango in week 7 of ABC's hit celebrity ballroom dancing series (read recap). The pair secured the second place spot in a tie with Rob Kardashian and his partner Cheryl Burke.

"If America, you know, votes for us and pulls us through, I guarantee you, starting Wednesday morning, I'm going to bust my butt," Martinez told OnTheRedCarpet.com after the performance. "You know, and I'm going to come back next week and I'm going to have something that's going to put me at the top of the leader board because that's where I want to be."

Martinez and Smirnoff have been in a battle for the top spot with competitors Ricki Lake and Derek Hough since the 13th season began in September.

It was tough, you know," Martinez said. "It's hard to take it but, everybody in life, you have kind of a down moment and this is kind of, I would say, for this season so far - it's kind of my down moment."

The six couples were split into teams of three to perform two group dances, and were a part of either "Team Tango" or "Team Paso Doble." David Arquette, Nancy Grace and Martinez scored 23 for their team Tango, and Ricki Lake, Hope Solo and Rob Kardashian scored a 26 for their team Paso Doble.

"We all put 100 percent into it and we all put a great routine together," Martinez added.

The six remaining pairs return on Tuesday, November 2, for an elimination episode, during which the seventh couple is expected to be sent packing.
