Ian Somerhalder: 'Vampire Diaries' season 4 will be amplified and unpredictable

07/16/2012 by Olivia Allin

Ian Somerhalder, Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley of The CW's "The Vampire Diaries" caught up with OnTheRedCarpet.com at San Diego Comic-Con and offered some insight into what fans can expect in the show's upcoming fourth season.

Spoiler alert!

At the end of season 3, Nina Dobrev's character Elena Gilbert, who has been trapped in a love triangle with vampire brothers Stefan (Wesley) and Damon Salvatore (Somerhalder), finally became a part of the supernatural side after suffering injuries in a car crash.

While Elena will no longer require the same protection she needed in her vulnerable human form, the Salvatore brothers will have to help her now that she has joined the vampire world.

"[Damon] doesn't have to protect Elena in a sense that, I mean, listen we all know that she, Elena is a very solid human being as an individual, and I think she sort of shepherded ... she's been a beckon of light to a lot of people in a sort of shepherded way," Somerhalder told OnTheRedCarpet.com at Comic-Con on Saturday.

"However, having said that, by virtue of the fact by looking at what Damon and Stefan went through, what any vampire goes through in sort of transition, which is sort of very interesting and sort of tangible metaphor for any sort of metamorphosis, we go through these extreme changes, who's to say that even though Elena is a very solid human being, what's going to happen to her when all of her emotions go haywire, her senses and her emotions are amplified a thousand-fold, ten-thousandfold," he added.

"We don't know what she's going to do. And I think that unpredictability, very much in the same sense that Stefan and Damon are very unpredictable when they are on a bender, Elena is now probably going to possess the capacity to be the same thing," Somerhalder continued.

"[Stefan and Damon will] maybe let her get a little wild now that she's invisible and I don't know [what my character will do] maybe go back to being Ripper Stefan, that's be nice," Wesley added.

In a clip which aired during "The Vampire Diaries" panel at Comic-Con, Elena is shown talking to Stefan about what she wanted for her future, which didn't include becoming a vampire.

"I see a lot of conflict and a lot of, you know, she's conflicted with herself and with what she's going through," Dobrev told OnTheRedCarpet.com. "I mean, she's going to have all these urges to beat but she doesn't want to hurt anyone. She's probably going to be fighting and trying to balance, all her emotions are going to be heightened."

The series, which debuted in September 2009, is the network's highest-rated show. In addition to vampires, several of the characters are witches, werewolves, ghosts and hybrids.

The fourth season of "The Vampire Diaries" is slated to premiere on October 11 at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. Watch a preview and the entire Comic-Con panel below.
