'Hunger Games' cast: Lenny Kravitz joins film as Cinna
Lenny Kravitz has joined the cast of "The Hunger Games," a film based on a novel by Suzanne Collins.
Kravitz, who appeared in the film "Precious," will be playing the role of Cinna, the fashion stylist of heroine Katniss Everdeen, who is played by Jennifer Lawrence.
"When I saw Lenny's work in 'Precious' I was just knocked out. It was quiet and strong and understated and open hearted; all qualities which define this character," director Gary Ross said in a statement on Monday, May 23. "I'm really looking forward to this ride."
Cinna is described as a "mild-mannered" first time stylist whose designs are "show-stopping." He's the stylist assigned to Everdeen for the lead up to the Hunger Games, a televised event that sees a boy and a girl from different districts fight each other to the death, film studio Lionsgate said. The film is set for release on March 23, 2012.
Woody Harrelson was recently confirmed to play the character of Haymitch Abernathy, Everdeen's mentor.
Others who have been cast in "The Hunger Games" include Stanley Tucci as Caesar Flickerman, the "upbeat" host of the Hunger Games, Wes Bentley of "American Beauty," who will play head game mastermind Seneca Crame, Elizabeth Banks, who will take on the role of Effie Trinket and Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth, who portray Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne, who compete for Everdeen's affections.
Jack Quaid, the son of actors Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan, Leven Rambin, Dayo Okeniyi, Amanda Stenberg, Jeremy Marinas and Dakota Hood have also been linked to the movie.
Kravitz, 46, was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for his role in "Precious." He also appeared in "The Diving Bell and the Butterfly" and "Zoolander." He's a Grammy-winning musician, known for songs such as "Dig In" and "Fly Away." His ninth studio album, "Black and White America," is set to be released in August.
