Hugh Jackman: Gay rumors 'bug' my wife
Hugh Jackman, who is nominated for an Oscar for his role in the 2012 film "Les Miserables," has opened up about gay rumors.
Jackman has faced scrutiny regarding his sexual orientation for many years. He is a former Broadway actor and won a Tony for his leading role of late Australian singer Peter Allen in the musical "The Boy From Oz." The actor told The Hollywood Reporter in a recent interview that the rumors don't go completely unnoticed by his wife.
"Just recently, it bugs her," Jackman said of his wife's response to the long-standing rumors. "She goes: 'It's big! It's everywhere!'"
Jackman wed actress and director Deborra-Lee Furness in 1996 after meeting on the set of their crime drama show, "Correlli." The pair share two adopted children, Oscar Maximillian, 12, and Ava Eliot, 7.
The 44-year-old actor's "X-Men" producer, Lauren Shuler Donner, says the actor is completely devoted to his wife.
"I have seen him with Deborra since the beginning of their trip to Hollywood, and I've been on five movie sets with him and have never seen him stray, have never seen him eye anyone," Donner said, according to the magazine. "I met him when he did 'Oklahoma!' - He was genuine, hugely talented. He was in love with his wife that day and still is."
The "Australia" actor went on to describe what initially attracted him to the actress.
"She was very beautiful," Jackman told the outlet. "She was unbelievably fun - this energy, this spirit - irrepressible. And she had a confidence in herself. I had a massive crush on her instantly ... She was sort of the opposite of me. I was very 'Even Steven,' and she was thrilling to me. I was always really attracted to that - though at one point, as it was getting really serious, it terrified me."
The actor, who often praises his wife Deb in interviews for her support, talked to OTRC at the Oscar luncheon and explained how she copes with him working with some of Hollywood's most gorgeous ladies.
"I've had people say to me, now how does Deb cope, if you're with Halle Berry, or Nicole Kidman, or Anne Hathaway that you work with," Jackman told OTRC on February 4. "And I say, here's the deal: They meet me, and we work, and it's fine, but as soon as they meet Deb, they don't ever want to talk to me again - because she's way more interesting, and way funnier, and way sexier, so it is all about Deb, and rightly so."
The "Les Miserables" actor is nominated for an Oscar for his role as Jean Valjean, a man who stole bread to feed his family and escapes jail, along with his past. Valjean rescues an impoverished orphan girl and joins a group of student revolutionaries in 19th century France but spends his life trying to find redemption.
