"How I Met Your Mother" fans, this is the moment you've been waiting for.
The hit comedy show, which follows Ted Moseby's search for the woman of his dreams, has revealed who the highly-anticipated "mother" is -- Broadway star Cristin Milioti of "Once." The actress made her debut on the show's season finale on Monday, May 13.
In the episode, the "girl with the yellow umbrella" is revealed as she arrives at a train station, wearing brown boots and a short dress. The actress purchases a ticket to Farhampton for Barney and Robin's wedding -- where she'll eventually meet Ted (See video below).
The CBS show often begins with narration by an older version of Ted, voiced by Bob Saget, who is telling his two children the story of how he met their mother. The entire eight-season build-up has lead to the introduction of Milioti's character, and the show's co-creator couldn't be happier with her casting.
"It was a pretty big umbrella to fill, casting the title role in a series that's been on the air for eight years," Carter Bays, the show's executive producer and co-creator said. "And yet Cristin Milioti is, against all odds, exactly what we were looking for. She made us laugh on '30 Rock,' she made us swoon in 'Once,' and her ukulele skills are no joke."
"We're thrilled to welcome her to the 'How I Met Your Mother' family, and look forward to getting to know her -- and the character she plays -- much better in the coming final season. And to all the fans, on behalf of all of us writers, cast and crew: Thank you for sticking with us on this wild journey. Our ninth season will tell the epic story of the longest wedding weekend ever. We hope you like it. Next stop, Farhampton ..."
Milioti, who is largely known for her role in Broadway shows including "That Face" and "The Devil's Disciple," is also known for her comedic appearance on NBC's "30 Rock" in 2011. The actress played the "sexy baby" comedienne Abby Flynn, who talked with a creepy voice and worked with Tina Fey's character, Liz Lemon.
The long-running show's eighth season finale reached its highest ratings among adults ages 18 to 49 since earlier this year, marking the night's top scripted program among adults in that demographic. The network's website attributes the boost to the fact that "the mother" was revealed.
Some of the show's stars took to Twitter to offer some hints about the actress' reveal, as well as react to her announcement.
"Tonight is a good night to watch How I Met Your Mother,'" Alyson Hannigan, who plays Lily Aldrin Tweeted. "The promos say its going to be the MOTHER of all shows!"
"Spoiler alert!!! Could not be more excited to have the beautiful talented Cristin Milioti join us on HIMYM,'" Cobie Smulders, who plays Robin Scherbatsky Tweeted.
The show's ninth and final season will air in late 2013 on CBS. Watch Milioti's big reveal below.
