Jeremy Renner and Gemma Arterton's fairytale inspired thriller film, "Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters," easily dominated the weekend box office.

The thriller film, which hit theaters on January 17, topped the weekend chart with a $19 million opening, according to The Hollywood Reporter. While the number isn't necessarily impressive, the drama earned $35.8 million internationally, making its worldwide cume upwards of $54.8 million.

The fantasy film is a spin on the classic fairy tale and shows Hansel and Gretel as bounty hunters who track and kill witches all over the world. As the fabled "blood moon" approaches, the siblings encounter a new form of evil that might hold a secret to their past.

"Mama" earned an estimated $12.9 million over the weekend, putting the horror film in second place, according to the magazine. The film, which stars Jessica Chastain, grossed $12.9 million in its second week for a domestic total of $48.6 million.

The film, directed by Oscar-nominated director Guillermo del Toro who is likely best known for the "Hellboy" franchise and "Pan's Labryinth," is about a couple who takes in their two nieces who were abandoned in the woods for five years after the deaths of their parents. However, the two girls have a bond with an evil spirit.

"Silver Linings Playbook" nabbed the No. 3 spot with $10 million for the weekend box office. The Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper drama's domestic total is now $69.5 million, according to the site.

The movie follows Pat (Cooper), a former teacher who moves back in with his parents after spending four years in a mental institution and falls for his friend's sex addicted sister-in-law, Tiffany. The unlikely pair bond over their struggles with mental illness, Tiffany bombards Pat on his morning runs and they end up ballroom dancing together (Watch the trailer).

"Zero Dark Thirty" tells the story of the American efforts to hunt down and kill Osama bin Laden. Chastain stars as a Maya, a young CIA officer who becomes obsessed with finding the former Al Qaeda leader. It was directed by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow.

Chastain won a Golden Globe for her performance in the film and is nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress in a Leading Role category.
